WHAT IS NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE?
Naturopathic medicine is a unique form of healthcare that identifies and treats the origin of disease with an emphasis on the body’s innate ability to self-heal and self-regulate. With proper education, the Naturopathic physician empowers the patient to make personal, life-style choices to obtain a greater sense of health with prevention at its core.
A board-certified Naturopathic Physician (ND or NMD) is required to graduate from an accredited 4-year naturopathic medical school after obtaining a bachelors degree. The doctor must pass both basic science and clinical boards, and depending on the individual state, the addition of acupuncture and minor surgery boards may be required. Similar to conventional medical schools, NMDs are trained in a system-based approach to diagnose and treat the patient according to both conventional and naturopathic standards. NMDs differ in the unique whole-body approach with extensive clinical training encompassing the naturopathic modalities: nutritional medicine, acupuncture, botanical medicine, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, physical medicine, holistic counseling, minor surgery, IV therapy and injection therapy
